Exploring deep in the Cove of The Withlacoochee I saw part of an Indian Mound. The area was inhabited going back to at least the 1500's when Hernando de Soto expedition near here. The site may have been part of a Seminole Indian village before and during the Second Seminole War in the 1800's. The Cove of the Withlacoochee was occupied by Indigenous peoples of Florida for many centuries. Evidence of occupation by people of the Deptford, Weeden Island, and Safety Harbor cultures have been found. There are many layers of history to this place and it is fascinating to learn about. I put some links below to learn more about the history. As always I left the area undisturbed. It is prohibited and illegal to dig for and remove artifacts from mounds in these areas.
